Lafourche Parish School District earns "A" rating
Lafourche Parish School District earns “A” rating on Louisiana Department of Education’s District Performance Score
Number of Students Scoring Mastery in English Language Arts and Math Doubles
Thibodaux, Louisiana – November 17, 2016 – Lafourche Parish School District today announced it earned an “A” rating from the Louisiana Department of Education’s District Performance Score. The district now ranks 13th in the state out of 73, a continued improvement in their ranking from 16th in 2015 and 19th in 2014.
“We are very proud of this rating,” said Dr. Jo Ann Matthews, Lafourche Superintendent. “Although school scores may fluctuate yearly, our success is a direct result of the commitment of our teachers, staff, students and parents – and their dedication to high academic standards and the pursuit of excellence.”
Since 1999, Louisiana has issued School Performance Scores for its public schools, based on student achievement data. The state adopted letter grades (A-F) to clearly communicate the quality of school performance to families and the public. Scores are based on a combination of assessment scores, credits earned and graduation performance depending on grade level. All schools with sufficient data receive school performance scores.
The Lafourche Parish School District earned a performance score of 102.2 this year, a 6.4 point increase from last year's score of 95.8. In addition, the district is now ranked sixth in the state for mastery growth, with an increase from 21to 42 percent. This includes doubling the number of students scoring mastery in English Language Arts and Math.
“These results demonstrate that with investment and focus, we can see significant gains,” added Julie Breaux, Lafourche Parish School Board President. “We cannot continue to do this without maintaining competitive salaries and providing our teachers and school staff with professional development and training.

STEM Project Donation
Lafourche Parish Schools has been awarded $25,000 for this school year from Chevron. Superintendent of Schools for Lafourche Parish Schools, Jo Ann Matthews, commented, “With the economic hardships school districts are facing across the nation, it is collaboration like this one that keep us on the cutting edge of education.”
Students in Louisiana can pursue two types of high school diplomas, a College and Career Diploma or a Career Diploma. In order for students to graduate with a Career Diploma, they must pass one core credential and two complimentary credentials in addition to their academic and career courses. All career pathways accept ACT WorkKeys’ National Career Readiness Silver, Gold, or Platinum Level Certificate as a core credential. ACT WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system that helps employers select, hire, train, develop, and retain a high-performance workforce. ACT WorkKeys assessment measures student performance in Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, Applied Technology, Reading for information, and Business Writing. A portion of the Chevron funding provided the ACT KeyTrain three year online program to all three high school sites. Four teachers, one from Thibodaux high School, one from Central Lafourche High School, and two from South Lafourche High School implemented the program in their classrooms. The teachers serviced 252 students (55 students from Thibodaux High School, 94 from Central Lafourche High School, and 103 from South Lafourche High School). Of the 252 students who used the ACT KeyTrain program, 20 earned a Gold level, 213 earned a Silver level, 2 earned a Platinum level, and 17 earned a Bronze level on their ACT WorkKeys assessment. A total of 235 students received a National Career Readiness Certificate allowing them to earn a core credential, so they can graduate with a Career Diploma.
In addition to the funding ACT KeyTrain program, Chevron funding also helped provide funding for ACT retake fees for 12th grade students at Thibodaux High School, Central Lafourche High School, and South Lafourche High School. The Louisiana Department of Education provides funding for all 11th grade students to take the ACT. After an additional year of classes, our students benefit from retaking the ACT at the end of their 12th grade year to increase their chance of receiving a higher ACT score. Out of approximately 801 12th grade students, 689 students retook the ACT. Of the 689 students, 263 (38%) increased their scored of an 18 or higher on their 2016 ACT compared to their 11th grade 2015 ACT score. Ninety of those students were at Central Lafourche High School, 82 at South Lafourche High School, and 91 were at Thibodaux High School.
Matthews, added, “We would like to thank Chevron for funding this project and celebrate 235 National Career Readiness Certificates and 263 increased ACT scores. Lafourche Parish Schools is grateful to Chevron for funding college and career readiness initiatives for high school students. With the help of these funds, 235 high school students received a National Career Readiness Certificate from ACT. Additionally, the funds helped 263 seniors to raise their ACT scores prior to graduation. The continuous efforts of Chevron and their employees helps Lafourche Parish Schools continue their mission of offering students the chance for success!”Lafourche Parish School District
